New Boat Ready to Break World Electric Water Speed Record

The Electric Record Team UK and their driver, Helen Loney, set a  Electric Water Speed Record on Coniston Water on the 1st November 2005. Following this huge success the team have set their sights higher and have built a new boat.

Firefly a 15 ft Hydroplane, piloted by 26 year old Powerboat Racer, Helen Loney. The boat has been specifically designed for straight-line record speed with a design capability of 130mph.

The team comprises leading technical experts in their fields, which means the boat is fitted with the latest motor and battery technology. The team is proud to show the World that the UK is at the forefront of Electric power technology.

‘FireFly’ had its maiden test runs on Coniston Water in the Lake District, at ‘Record’s Week’ in November 2007. These trials proved to be a great success and the team are working on further developments over the Winter and aim to attempt to set a new ‘World Electric Water Speed Record’ in 2008.

World Electric Water Speed Record Holder Set To Go Again

The electric record team has a new boat under construction to take the world record over 100 mph.

Activity is now well underway on the construction of a new hydroplane, designed for speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The new boat again piloted by 25 year old Helen Loney, will start development trails around spring 2007. The plan is to attempt to raise Helen’s record later in the year at the Coniston record week.

While the new boat is being developed to take advantage of recent advances in battery and motor design, the big step forward is expected to be from hull design & running gear.

As Helen said, “An Stradag (the boat in which she set the existing record) was at the limit of her design speed capability when we set the current record, so just adding more power would at best only give us 1 or 2 more mph. With this in mind the team decided that if we were to go again then we needed a new, more capable hull. Which is just what we’ve done with our new hull which is capable of 120 mph + on paper”

With the new boat well underway and as yet un named, the team is currently looking for a sponsorship partner to join them in their quest for more success.

World Unlimited Electric Water Speed Record Smashed

On November 1st 2005, 24 year old Helen Loney piloted ‘An Stradag’, The 15ft electrically powered hydroplane to a new World Unlimited Electric Water Speed Record average of 68.09mph.

The previous UIM record of 50mph had been set some 16 years before by the same boat, then piloted by 75 year old Fiona, Countess of Arran. The new record was set in sunny calm
conditions on Coniston Water, in the English lake district, at the very place where Donald Campbell had crashed in Bluebird K7.

The 4 revolutionary electric motors, powered by 12 Chloride Motive Power batteries, were designed by Cedric Lynch and built by Agni Motors of Gujurat, India.

Helen was accompanied by her cuddly duck mascot ‘George’ as she flew down the lake at 70.610mph on her first run and 65.561mph on the return, giving an average speed, and new record, of 68.09mph.

When she got back ashore Helen said “I felt like I was flying, the sensation was incredible. But I think we can go faster still, it depends on the team working out why my return run was slower.”

The team plan to run several more times this week, if the conditions are suitable, in an attempt to further increase the record to over 70mph.

Full speed ahead for British team’s World Electric Waterspeed Record attempt

Alongside the boats original designer Lorne Campbell and electric motor specialist Cedric Lynch of Agnimotors the project will again be technically
co-ordinated by the Thames Electric Launch Company (TELCO). Additional sponsors include Cholride Motive Power Batteries, Curtis Instruments and Albright International who will be supplying power, controls and technical know how.

With weight being a critical factor in the attempt, 24 year old Helen Loney of Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club will make the attempt. Helen, who has been club champion over the last two years is the currant holder of the Donald Campbell Salver, so she should not only have the experience required but also the pedigree, as both her father and grandfather were championship winning powerboat drivers in their time.

Over the last few months the boat has been totally refitted at Henwood and Dean’s boatyard in Henley, with the installation of brand new motors, which, when coupled to much improved batteries will provide over double the hp of the original 1989 motors. Alongside these advances will be improved controls,
aerodynamics and propellers.

The attempt itself will take place during the annual October Speed Record Week, held for the first time this year on Coniston Water in the English Lake District, the venue of many world records for Donald Campbell’s Bluebird K7, due to the introduction of a 10mph speedlimit on Windermere.
